A check engine light that comes on is a warning message. It’s telling you that your vehicle’s computer has found a problem and computer diagnostics should be performed. If your vehicle seems to be running fine, you are probably safe to drive for a little while, at least until you can schedule an appointment for diagnosis. It’s possible that a loose gas cap, a bad spark plug, or a broken hose is telling your car’s computer to turn on this warning light. But what should you do if the check engine light is flashing? In that situation, find a safe place to pull off the road and shut the engine off. Wait a few minutes, restart the car, and then begin driving again. If the light starts flashing again, most manufacturers will tell you to stop driving the car.
