You’ve probably never gotten out of bed and wondered if this would be the day you’d find out your car, truck or SUV needed a starter replacement. You may, however, have gotten into your car, inserted the key in the ignition, and turned it on only to hear a slight clicking or ratcheting sound, or no sound at all. At that point, your heart sinks. You have somewhere you have to be and a vehicle that won’t start to get you there.

Three starting system components, the battery, alternator, or starter motor, could be the source of your problem. A towing service may be able to jump your car and get you going if the problem is with the alternator or battery. However, if a jump fails get you started, you may be due for a starter replacement. Your shop can perform a charging and starting diagnosis to try to pinpoint the problem, but sometimes starter problems happen intermittently.

You can help your shop mechanic or service writer diagnose whether a starter replacement is necessary by providing one key piece of information. Let them know what happens to your car’s interior lights or headlights when your car won’t start. Lights that stay on even though turning the key won’t start the car usually means the battery is good.

With a good battery and proper connections between components, an intermittent “no crank” problem means a starter replacement will most likely fix your problem.
